H-1B Filing Strategies for SRE and Container Orchestration Roles

Site reliability and container platform roles sit in a favorable position for H-1B petitions: they require a specific body of engineering knowledge, they carry measurable business impact, and they are compensated at levels that clear prevailing wage comfortably. The petitions that struggle are usually the ones described as tool operation rather than engineering.

Frame the specialty occupation correctly

The petition must show that the position normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific specialty. Describe an SRE role in terms of distributed systems reasoning: capacity modeling, error budget policy, failure domain analysis, consensus and scheduling behavior in Kubernetes, latency budgeting across service meshes. These are engineering disciplines taught in computer science and engineering programs.

Avoid describing the role as 'managing Kubernetes' or 'monitoring servers'. Administration language invites the argument that the position does not require a degree in a specific field.

Choose the LCA wage level deliberately

The Labor Condition Application wage level should match the actual seniority and independence of the role. A Level I wage attached to a job description full of architectural ownership and on-call leadership is an internal contradiction that reviewers notice. For most experienced platform engineers, Level II or III is both accurate and defensible.

File the LCA for every intended worksite, including remote work locations, and post the notice as required. Remote-first pods still have a worksite of record.

Third-party placement and the itinerary requirement

When an engineer works at a client site, the petition needs evidence of the employer-employee relationship and, where multiple locations are involved, an itinerary of services. Statements of work, organizational charts showing the reporting line back to the petitioner, and evidence of who evaluates performance all carry weight.

The pod model helps here. Because DevGrid Staffing assigns, supervises, and reviews the pod as a unit, the reporting line back to the petitioning employer is structural rather than nominal.

Cap timing and alternatives

The registration window for cap-subject petitions runs in the spring for an October start. Plan hiring twelve to fifteen months ahead of the date you actually need the engineer productive. If the registration is not selected, the practical alternatives include cap-exempt employers, O-1 for engineers with a strong publication or open-source record, and continued work under an existing OPT or STEM OPT period where one is available.

Do not treat the lottery as a plan. Treat it as one branch of a plan that also includes cap-exempt and non-cap pathways.

Key takeaways

  • Describe SRE work as distributed systems engineering, not tool administration.
  • Match the LCA wage level to the responsibilities written in the job description.
  • Document the reporting line and supervision structure for client-site placements.
  • File LCAs for every worksite, including remote locations.
  • Build cap-exempt and non-cap branches into the hiring plan before the lottery.
